What is a student mortgage?
Most students do not have a regular income beyond casual work or a part-time position. However, if arranged with a guarantor such as a parent or legal guardian, students can take out a mortgage while at university, often for as much as 100% of the property value. There are several benefits to this type of deal. You don’t have to pay high accommodation fees, but have something to show for your outlay at the end of the course. You don’t have to move every year and you can decorate your house however you prefer! You can even rent out extra rooms to friends and fellow students. Perhaps the most important benefit is that you will have invested in something that may increase in value over the course of your studies. If you leave the area after you graduate, you may be able to sell the property on at a profit.
